The space can provide forward or parallel access to the bathroom equipment and part of the area can underneath the equipment as long as there is enough clearance for the knees and toes of the person in the wheelchair. Grab bars shall be at least 40 inches 1015 mm long or at least 42 inches 1065 mm long for alternate stalls. However they are offset by the additional need to accommodate an individual in a wheelchair. Handicap accessible showers are easier to get in and out of than conventional showers or bathtubs.

The source for the information below is the 2010 ada standards for accessible design. Ambulatory compartment stalls are 35 37 width and have a 32 door which is handicap prepped. More or less than that makes maneuvering difficult. The required minimum floor space for a handicapped accessible bathroom is 30 inches by 48 inches.

In a corner handicap stalls require a minimum of 60 x 60 compartment and is required with a minimum door size of 32 and the maximum size and more common is the 36 door. Accessible toilet stalls or compartments must have a minimum width of 60 inches and sufficient space to accommodate a wheelchair to the sides of the toilet or in front of it. Grab bars in toilet stall requirements. These compartments require 60 depth at a minimum.

If a toilet is provided at least one toilet must be handicap accessible. For this reason handicap accessible stalls are designed so that the door opens out into the restroom. Horizontal grab bars must be installed behind the toilet and on the nearest wall or partition whichever is closer. Side grab bars shall be located 33 36 inches 840 915 mm above the finish floor and shall be no more than 12 inches 305 mm from the rear wall.

More or less than that makes maneuvering difficult. Horizontal grab bars must be provided at the back of the toilet and on the nearest wall. In both alternate stalls the centerline of the water closet is 18 inches 455 mm from a side wall. The toilet should be approachable in a wheelchair from the side or the front.

The 48 inches 1220 mm minimum stall shall have a grab bar behind the water closet and one on the side wall next to the water closet. Toilet seat heights must be 17 to 19 inches above the finished floor. Grab bars are mounted 33 36 inches 840 915 mm above the finish floor. Installing a handicap shower stall with a level shower floor will make a world of difference for seniors and people with a physical disability.
